Dear 5849376,

Tell Speaker Pelosi: Pass assault weapons ban now

The murderers in Gilroy, El Paso and Dayton all used assault weapons. But even though the Democratic House of Representatives passed strong background check legislation, the House has not yet approved an assault weapons ban.1

Republicans are to blame for keeping gun control from becoming law and exacerbating the growing crisis of white supremacist terror, but a national catastrophe of this magnitude requires a bipartisan response. We cannot let either party off the hook.

Forty-eight House Democrats just sent a letter to Speaker Pelosi demanding that she bring them back into session to address this crisis.2 Now, we need to keep the pressure on and make it clear to Speaker Pelosi that bold action is necessary. Banning assault weapons is a critical step to making sure these horrific attacks never happen again.

In February, the House of Representatives passed two bills to close major loopholes in gun purchase background checks, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell won't bring them to the floor of the Senate for a vote. House leaders are rightly focused on keeping the pressure on Mitch McConnell. But they are wrong to worry that reconvening the House would be a distraction from this effort.3

If Speaker Pelosi calls the House of Representatives back into session to pass gun control legislation, it shows that Democrats are willing to take bold action to keep us safe while Republicans hide in fear of the racist NRA.

At the top of the list for the House of Representatives is prohibiting the manufacture and sale of assault weapons and "large capacity" magazines for civilian use, and instituting a "red flag" law to prevent people who pose a risk from purchasing firearms.4

Earlier this year in New Zealand, after a gunman shot and killed 50 people at two mosques, it took lawmakers just three days to pass legislation banning assault weapons and high capacity magazines.5 We need that legislation too, and Democrats in the House of Representatives should take the lead and put even more pressure on the Republican-led Senate.
