Dear 5849376,

Tell 2020 Dem Candidates: Restore net neutrality in your first 100 days

Donald Trump and Ajit Pai's repeal of net neutrality is an attack on free speech and our democracy.

A free, open and affordable internet increases access to information, provides a backbone for organizing and keeps our communities connected at a time when fear mongers in the White House and Congress are trying to divide and tear us apart. Without it, authoritarians like Trump could rise to power faster and do even more damage.

Restoring the open internet needs to be a top priority for any Democrat trying to unseat Trump in 2020. We have the power to make sure that happens. As Democratic presidential hopefuls ramp up their campaigns, we must demand that they commit to appointing FCC commissioners who will restore strong net neutrality protections as soon as they take office. Losing the open internet has been particularly harmful for communities of color, who rely on it to organize, create economic opportunity and fight back against oppression. Our fight for every progressive issue depends on the open internet. If companies like Comcast and AT&T get to decide who can communicate, we all lose.

Our activism has already pushed Democrats in the House of Representatives to support net neutrality. Just this year, they passed the Save the Internet Act.1 But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refuses to bring the legislation up for a vote.2 If the next president appoints FCC commissioners who will give us back the free and open Internet, Mitch McConnell and his Republican lackies in Congress won't be able to stop them.

It's appalling that moderators have failed to ask a single question about net neutrality during any of the Democratic presidential debates. That is unacceptable. An issue that impacts millions of Americans needs to get the attention it deserves.

With the telecom industry throwing millions of dollars at presidential candidates, there's no telling which ones will make the right decision on their own.3 That's why we're joining with Fight for the Future, Demand Progress and other progressive partners to force all democratic 2020 hopefuls go on record now.
