Dear 5849376,

Stop Trump's anti-worker Labor nominee Eugene Scalia

Trump the Wall Street puppet strikes again.

His grand campaign promises to working people in America were lies. Instead, he is pursuing a narrow, white-supremacist agenda in the hopes of distracting people from how many handouts he is giving to Wall Street. That includes "the most hostile anti-labor agenda" of any modern occupant of the White House.1

Trump's latest outrage is his nomination of Eugene Scalia – a man who "spent his entire career fighting for big businesses and against working people" and the son of the brazenly corrupt and pro-corporate Supreme Court justice Antonin Scalia – as secretary of Labor.2 We need to build pressure on the Senate to reject this nomination before corporate Democrats and wavering Republicans talk themselves into supporting him.

"Trump has turned the Department of Labor into the Department of Employer Rights," Michael Hiltzik writes, noting that it started with Trump's first secretary of Labor nominee, fast food tycoon Andy Puzder. After Puzder withdrew, Trump pivoted to Alex Acosta, the scandal-tarred former prosecutor who had to resign recently for letting sex trafficker and Trump pal Jeremy Epstein off the hook. There are even rumblings that Trump was more bothered by Acosta's slow approach to attacking workers' rights than his treatment of Epstein.3,4

Enter Eugene Scalia, who has made it his life's mission to defend corporate interests, helping:5,6

  • Walmart defeat a law that would have forced the company to pay for health care for its workers.
  • Casinos avoid securing tips for employees.
  • Fight Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules to protect worker safety
  • Represent a who's who of giant corporate firms, including Chevron, Viacom and Saudi Arabian oil interests.
  • Earn himself a reputation as one of Wall Street's "go-to guys for challenging financial regulations."

Trump's Department of Labor fought a livable wage, rolled back protections to keep Wall Street from scamming retirees, gave the likes of McDonald's legal cover for wrongdoing, undermined people's rights in the workplace and helped companies buddy up to union-busting firms. Trump also rolled back Obama's overtime pay rule that would have given millions of Americans a raise.7

Scalia is more of the same awful anti-worker agenda, and we need to show the Senate that there will be a political price for helping big bosses exploit working Americans. Tell the Senate: Reject anti-worker Labor Secretary nominee Eugene Scalia. Click below to sign the petition:
