Tell the Justice Department: Block the Monsanto-Bayer merger

The petition to the Department of Justice reads:
"The mega-merger of Monsanto and Bayer could put 90 percent of the world's food production in the hands of only four multinational corporations, threaten the safety of our food supply and further push a model of agriculture that relies too heavily on toxic chemicals and genetically modified foods. Block this merger now."

Dear 5849376,

Agricultural seed and chemical giant Monsanto just agreed to a $66 billion merger with German pharmaceutical and farm-chemical maker Bayer. If the deal goes through, the newly merged company will be one of the largest agrochemical firms in the world and could put 90 percent of the world's food supply in the hands of only four multinational corporations.1

The results would be dire: Our food would be sprayed with more toxic pesticides and produced with more GMO seeds. Food choices for consumers would drastically decrease while the price of food worldwide could skyrocket.

There's a simple way to stop this dangerous merger: The Department of Justice (DOJ) can enforce antitrust laws to block the merger and put a stop to the consolidation of agribusinesses. We need to speak up now to tell the DOJ to stop increased corporate control of our food supply.

While you might know Bayer from its popular aspirin brand and other drugstore staples, the company has a long history of peddling chemicals that are dangerous to humans and detrimental to the environment. Bayer is one of the world's leading makers of bee-killing neonicotinoids pesticides.2 Its potential merger with Monsanto, which has a long history of inflicting damage to our food supply and environment, would make the company bigger and more powerful than it already is.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle in Congress are expressing deep concern over this pending merger, and progressive champion Sen. Bernie Sanders is leading the charge in the U.S. Senate, recently saying, "these mergers boost the profits of huge corporations and leave Americans paying even higher prices. Not only should this merger be blocked, but the Department of Justice should reopen its investigation of Monsanto's monopoly over the seed and chemical market."3

Regulators have an obligation to block this dangerous mega-merger to protect farmers, producers, consumers and the environment from complete corporate control of our food supply. We must amplify Sen. Sanders' demand for the DOJ to block this merger now to protect consumers, not Monsanto and Bayer's bottom lines.
