No sweatshop toys for the holidays

The petition to Mattel, Hasbro, Disney, and Wal-Mart reads:
"For 20 years, the toy industry has skirted fundamental labor rights, utilizing sweatshops in China to manufacture toys, and your companies have been the biggest beneficiaries. You have the power to end these abuses. Take immediate steps to raise wages and improve working conditions for your Chinese employees."

Dear 5849376,

While parents across the country this holiday season will buy countless toys for their children, thousands of workers in Chinese sweatshops will be working 12-hour days for pennies in unsafe factories in order to fuel America's obsession with cheap toys.

Factories in China that supply some of the most famous and profitable toy brands in the world, including Frozen, Hot Wheels, Star Wars, Nerf, Monster High, FurReal Friends, and Little People, are plagued by widespread abuses of workers' human rights. The conditions are so poor that "over the course of a year, a toy worker may only be able to see her parents and children one time."1

The toys produced at these factories bring in tremendous profits for Mattel, Hasbro, Disney, and the largest toy retailer Wal-Mart, yet workers struggle to make ends meet. Even after putting in 12-hour shifts, six days a week, workers don't receive their due wages or benefits and are subject to unsafe working conditions.

We must call on these toy companies to use their power to end these abuses, pay their workers full and fair compensation, and drastically improve working conditions.

According to a new report by the watchdog group China Labor Watch, which has conducted over 100 undercover investigations of toy factories since 1999, Chinese toy factories have violated numerous labor and human rights laws – including wage theft and discriminatory hiring practices – and subjected their workers to hazardous work environments with inadequate safety measures, excessive and mandatory overtime work, and poor living conditions.2

Examples of horrific abuses at these toy sweatshops include workers doing four-hour shifts without taking a break for water or the restroom. According to the report, workers at these sweatshops operate in unsanitary, crowded facilities with lack of access to bathrooms or showers and insufficient protective equipment.3

For the last 15 years, many of these labor abuses have remained unchanged. Even toy industry association The International Council of Toy Industries admits that nearly 100 of its certified factories do not comply with local minimum wage laws, potentially affecting tens of thousands of workers.4

Earlier this year, three separate groups of hundreds of Chinese toy workers protested for millions of dollars in unpaid compensation and benefits from their factories that make products for Hasbro, Mattel, Disney, and Wal-Mart. But police were quick to quash these protests, forcing workers to surrender their legally-protected rights.5

We must have these workers' backs as they continue to fight for fair wages and better working conditions. By shining a light on these workers' plights and putting massive pressure on the major toy corporations that are exploiting them, we can ensure that workers will receive better pay and work in safer factories.
