CREDO action

Dear 5849376,

Stop the TPP

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a secretive trade deal being negotiated behind closed doors by the governments of a dozen countries (including ours) colluding with corporate interests.

Under the TPP, more American jobs would be offshored. Internet freedom would be a joke. Developing countries would lose access to lifesaving medicines. Unsafe foods and products could pour into our country. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

The first stage in the plan to pass the TPP is a big push by President Obama and the Republican-led Congress to pass Fast Track trade authority, which would short-circuit the typical legislative process when trade deals like the TPP come up for a vote.

Just yesterday Senate Finance Committee Chair Orrin Hatch, Ranking Democratic Member Ron Wyden, and House Ways and Means Committee Chair Paul Ryan reached an agreement on a Fast Track bill. And, with President Obama using the full force of the White House behind the campaign to pass Fast Track, now is the time for House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to publicly go on record against Fast Track and the TPP.

Call House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and ask her to publicly announce her opposition to Fast Track and the TPP. Click here for the number to call and a sample script.

Leader Pelosi's counterpart in the Senate, Minority Leader Harry Reid, is already on record against Fast Track and the TPP. Recently, he said at a press conference:

I have always been suspect in my entire career in Congress of these trade agreements. I don't support Fast Track. Why? Because I have not been shown that these trade agreements have helped the middle class.1

Last year, under pressure from activists, Pelosi spoke out against Fast Track. But now she's waffling and saying that she wants to work with the White House to pass a deal.2

Given the clear threat that the TPP poses to American jobs, our economy, the environment, and so much more, it's a no-brainer for Leader Pelosi to join Reid in opposing this bad deal. But it's clear that she won't come out in opposition unless we push her to.

Fast Track trade authority would allow the president to sign a trade deal before Congress has an opportunity to approve it.

Then the president could send it to Congress with a guarantee that it will get an up-or-down vote within 90 days.

Fast Track would mean there would be no meaningful hearings, limited debate and absolutely no amendments to the deal – or "implementing legislation" that would rewrite wide swaths of our domestic laws. And there would be tremendous pressure on Congress to rubber-stamp anything the president signs.

It's the job of Congress to fully vet trade deals and ensure they work for everyone, not just giant corporations. And it would be a deeply irresponsible abdication of responsibility for Congress to pass Fast Track right before a push to force approval of the TPP.
