Dear 5849376, Ninety-three percent of Americans support labeling genetically modified foods,1 yet Monsanto's allies in Congress have successfully fought off attempts to pass any meaningful legislation to label GMOs. That all could change if a recently introduced bill to mandate labeling of GMOs gets enough support in Congress. Commonsense legislation introduced by Rep. Peter Defazio and Sen. Barbara Boxer would require the Food and Drug Administration to clearly label GMO foods so that consumers can make informed choices about what they're feeding their families. Monsanto and Big Ag have already spent over $100 million to defeat GMO labeling in a handful of states,2 so it's certain they will spare no expense to keep this bill from becoming law. We must act now to show Congress that there is widespread support for this critical legislation to label GMO food across the country. Tell Congress to support our right to know what's in our food. Click here to sign the petition. The Genetically Engineered Food Right-to-Know Act would "establish a consistent and enforceable standard for labeling of foods produced using genetic engineering, thereby providing consumers with knowledge of how their food is produced."3 The bill also prohibits any food labeled with the misleading term "natural" from containing genetically modified ingredients. An overwhelming majority of Americans support labeling genetically engineered foods, and 64 countries, including China, Russia, India and the European Union, require GMO labeling.4 This bipartisan legislation has broad support from consumer rights and environmental organizations, farmers, chefs, and food producers.5 We have a fundamental right to know what we're eating, and this legislation would go a long way to giving us more information about what's in our food. We can't let Monsanto and its allies keep us in the dark any longer about what we're eating. Tell Congress to support mandatory GMO labeling now.
