Time for Congress to say no to discrimination against gays

Tell Speaker of the House John Boehner:
"After Indiana, lawmakers in both parties need to take a stand to affirm gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people's equality under the law. Bring the Equality for All Resolution up for a vote."

Dear 5849376,

Equality for all.

From Indiana to Arkansas to Georgia, state legislators' attempts to license religious-based discrimination against gays are being met with local and national outrage.

When faced with the possibility of consumer and corporate boycotts, governors like Indiana's Mike Pence have been forced to backpedal. When a governor in a solidly red state has to back away from a chance to burnish his conservative credentials through clear, public support of anti-gay discrimination, it means that our pressure is working. And it means that there's a window to leverage that momentum in Congress.

People's access to equal protection under the law shouldn't depend on the state they live in. That's why legal protection for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people needs to become a national priority.

Tell Congress: It's time to step in against state-based hate and pass a resolution opposing discrimination against gays.

Indiana Congressman André Carson, along with more than 125 co-sponsors, has just introduced the Equality for All Resolution. It gives Congress a chance to take a stand against discrimination in the name of religion.1 Members of Congress are surely paying attention to the nationwide outrage over the passage of Indiana's license to discriminate. With enough pressure, lawmakers may take this important first step to ensure equality for gays at the national level.

Republicans in the House would clearly rather not have to go on the record about gay equality at all, which is why we've got to pressure Speaker Boehner to call a public vote on Carson's resolution. While the resolution would only express the "sense of Congress," it would pave the way for comprehensive non-discrimination legislation expected to be introduced later this spring.

It's time for Congress to lead on equality. Tell Speaker Boehner to call for a vote on the Equality for All Resolution. Click the link below to sign the petition:
