Dear 5849376,

Last fall, on the 42nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade, House Speaker John Boehner scheduled a vote on an abortion ban as a way to pander to his party's extremist, anti-woman base.

Instead, his vote got cancelled. The bill, which had only the narrowest exceptions for rape, went too far even for this extreme Congress. CREDO, NARAL and other groups organized a massive outcry against attempts to play politics with women's rights. Combined with a revolt among women in the Republican caucus, we were able to force Republican leaders to fold.

But the ban is coming back. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy says passing the bill is one of his top three priorities. Rep. Renee Ellmers, who led the revolt of Republican women in the fall, is indicating that small changes made to the rape and incest exception might be enough to regain her support.

Tell the House: Don't play politics with women's lives. Vote no on any attempt to ban abortion. Click here to sign the petition.

Banning abortion after 20 weeks takes crucial medical decisions away from women, their families, and their doctors. It's also clearly unconstitutional — Roe v. Wade protects a woman's right to choose an abortion up to the point of fetal viability (which occurs well beyond 20 weeks).

Abortion bans after 20 weeks are part of a concerted effort by anti-choice activists to undermine women's rights and challenge Roe v. Wade. They rely on disproven junk science to claim that a fetus can feel pain after 20 weeks. If a 20-week ban passes, it validates this dangerous, anti-woman science, and opens the door for judges hostile to abortion rights to use debunked "facts" to legally undermine Roe.1

Put anti-choice members of Congress on notice: When anti-woman politicians try to take away women's rights, we fight back. Click here to sign the petition.

The reality is that 99% of abortions do happen before the 21st week.2 When they happen after that mark, it's usually because something terrible has occurred with the pregnancy and the parents make the heart-wrenching decision to terminate. But Roe v. Wade does not protect 99% of women, it protects all of them. Every time a conservative politician is allowed to move the goal post further from Roe, women lose.

When a woman's right to choose is under attack by right-wing extremists, we need to be there to defend it. Even staunchly anti-choice members of Congress need to hear from their constituents that a 20-week abortion ban bill crosses a line. CREDO members have helped defeat other anti-choice measures across the country. We cannot let the right-wing build momentum that helps them erode the protections afforded to women through Roe v. Wade.

Tell the House: We won't let you take away women's rights. Click the link below to sign the petition:
