Stop the TPP: Call Senator Ron Wyden Today

Stop the TPP: Make a call to Senator Wyden

Opposing Fast Track is our best chance to stop the TPP, and an overwhelming majority of Democrats are already on the record in opposition. But Senator Ron Wyden, the leading Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, is working with Republican Senate leaders to write and pass a new Fast Track bill. Make a call to his office today to ask him to publicly oppose Fast Track and help stop the TPP.

Dear 5849376,

Stop the TPP

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a secretive trade deal being negotiated behind closed doors by the governments of a dozen countries (including ours) colluding with corporate interests.

Under the TPP, more American jobs would be offshored. Internet freedom would be a joke. Developing countries would lose access to lifesaving medicines. Unsafe foods and products could pour into our country. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

The first stage in the plan to pass the TPP is a big push for the Republican-led Congress to pass Fast Track trade authority, which would short-circuit the typical legislative process when trade deals like the TPP come up for a vote.

Not a single Democrat would sponsor the legislation to establish Fast Track in 2014 – including Oregon Senator Ron Wyden, who publicly opposed it. But, now according to our allies in Washington, Senator Wyden – as the ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee – is actively working with Chairman Hatch in an attempt to reintroduce a new version of Fast Track legislation.

Fast Track trade authority would allow the president to sign a trade deal before Congress has an opportunity to approve it.

Then the president could send it to Congress with a guarantee that it will get an up-or-down vote within 90 days.

Fast Track would mean there would be no meaningful hearings, limited debate and absolutely no amendments to the deal – or "implementing legislation" that would rewrite wide swaths of our domestic laws. And there would be tremendous pressure on Congress to rubber-stamp anything the president signs.

We cannot let Senator Wyden jump ship on Fast Track. If he supports it as the leading Democrat in the Senate Finance Committee it could send a signal to corporate shills in the House and Senate Democratic caucuses that the bill is suddenly safe to get behind.

It's the job of Congress to fully vet trade deals and ensure they work for everyone, not just giant corporations. And it would be a deeply irresponsible abdication of responsibility for Congress to pass Fast Track right before a push to force approval of the TPP.
