STOP the plan to open the Atlantic to oil and gas drilling

Tell the Obama administration: No oil and gas drilling in the Atlantic.

Submit a public comment to the Interior Department:
"The Interior Department's draft plan to open areas along the U.S. Atlantic coast for oil and gas drilling is a backwards energy policy that endangers America's coast while also increasing the carbon emissions that are responsible for climate change. Remove all areas along the Atlantic coast from consideration for oil and gas drilling."

Dear 5849376,

The Obama administration has released the draft of a plan that would, for the first time since the early 1980s, allow offshore oil and gas drilling along the U.S. Atlantic coast.1

Not only would this backwards energy plan put America's entire East Coast at risk for an oil spill – it would also release even more of the carbon emissions that are fueling climate change.

The Obama administration is taking public comments on this plan – but only for the next few weeks. We need to fight back now to stop it.

A group of Democratic senators are standing up to challenge this plan.2 And a flood of comments from us to the Interior Department right now could help send the Obama administration's disastrous offshore drilling plan back to the drawing board.

The five-year plan released by the Interior Department3 would lease parts of the Atlantic Ocean for new oil and gas drilling off the coast of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia. The risk of a massive oil spill – which could pollute the entire East Coast of the U.S. – far outweighs any economic benefits derived from extracting even more dirty, climate-disrupting energy.

Since the 2010 BP oil spill, which devastated America's Gulf Coast in the largest marine oil spill in history, Congress hasn't required any new safety regulations to prevent another spill.

Furthermore, a report by the environmental group Oceana found that offshore wind development could create twice as many jobs and generate twice as much energy as oil and gas drilling along the Atlantic coast.4

We need to fight back now to stop the Obama administration's latest dirty energy plan.
