Dear 5849376,

The Arctic® Apple, the first USDA-approved genetically modified apple, could soon hit major fast food chains near you.

Six of the largest fast food chains – McDonald's, Burger King, Dunkin Donuts, Subway, Wendy's and Starbucks – serve sliced apples or products made with apples to their customers, yet none has publicly committed to not selling this potentially dangerous food in their restaurants.

This GMO apple comes with numerous health and safety concerns,1 and in many cases, consumers won't even know that they're eating a GMO apple, since genetically engineered foods are not required to be labeled.

This frankenfood apple is genetically engineered not to brown when cut or bruised, producing a spotless apple when sliced and packaged. However, we have no idea what long-term health effects the Arctic® Apple could have on the millions of people who may eat this GMO apple. In fact, the process to engineer this apple is virtually untested and could pose unnecessary risks to our health.2

What's more, the apple growers' industry associations, representing over 60 percent of commercial orchards, have already come out against GMO apples.3 Many are concerned about reduced consumer confidence in the apple market, while some organic growers are concerned that pollen contamination from GMO orchards could endanger their organic certification.4

McDonald's publicly suggested that it may not sell GMO apples5 and has recently committed to sourcing non-GMO potatoes for its french fries,6 so this campaign is clearly winnable.

Even if you don't eat at fast food chains, your support could still help keep GMO apples out of our food supply. If we can keep up the pressure on these major fast food chains to reject GMO foods, including the Arctic® Apple, it will go a long way to keeping GMO foods from reaching more stores and restaurants across the country.
