Urge President Obama to sign an executive order requiring disclosure of political spending by federal contractors

Tell President Obama:
"Corporations that receive government contracts shouldn't be able to secretly spend big money electing and re-electing the same lawmakers who are handing out government contracts. Sign an executive order to make government contractors disclose their political spending."

Dear 5849376,

Corporate behemoths – from Chevron and Lockheed Martin to AT&T, Verizon and even companies affiliated with the Koch brothers – make vast amounts of money off of federal government contracts.1 2

And here's what's truly outrageous: Corporations that receive government contracts can secretly funnel untold sums to help elect and re-elect the very same lawmakers who are responsible for awarding government contracts.

It's a cycle of corruption.

If we can't stop the flow of corporate money into politics, we should at least make it transparent where government contractors are concerned. And this is something President Obama can do without approval from Congress or a decision from the Supreme Court.

Recently, President Obama expressed his strong support for a constitutional amendment to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court's appalling Citizens United ruling.

Having the president's support in the fight for a constitutional amendment to stop billionaires and corporations from taking over our elections provides important momentum for our grassroots movement. But it doesn't change the facts on the ground where our current system is involved.

The president needs to back up his words with action. He can use his authority right now to require corporations with business before the government to be transparent about their electioneering activities, allowing voters to see for themselves if their representatives or senators seem to owe corporations any big favors. This is far short of the change we need to see but it's a meaningful step towards holding corporations accountable.
