Important update on Iran diplomacy

CREDO action
What we need to do to stop war with Iran.

Dear 5849376,

We've reached a decisive moment in our campaign to prevent a war with Iran and stop Republicans from sabotaging President Obama's diplomacy.

Yesterday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave a deeply controversial speech in front of a Joint Session of Congress – arranged in secret by Republican Speaker John Boehner to undermine President Obama – denouncing diplomacy with Iran.

In a sign of how the tide is turning in support of diplomacy, at least 58 Democrats listened to the more than 77,000 CREDO members who urged them to skip the speech in protest and chose not to attend.1

And last week, Democratic Senator Robert Menendez renewed his warmongering on Iran by partnering with Republican hawk Bob Corker to introduce a new anti-diplomacy bill. The bill would create a vast system of procedural hurdles to hamper the administrations' efforts to strike a deal with Iran and give Congress tools to prevent a deal from being implemented.

Meanwhile, at the negotiating table, it appears increasingly likely that our diplomats are about to strike a good deal with Iran. That's great news, but it means we need to double down on our efforts to stop Republicans in Congress and warmongering Democrats from interfering. Here's what you can do:

1. Share the op-ed that CREDO Action Political Director Becky Bond and Civic Action Executive Director Anna Galland published in Roll Call. You can read the full op-ed by clicking here, share it via email by clicking here, share it on Facebook by clicking here and share it on Twitter by clicking here. Here are the key paragraphs:

If these talks fail because of unwarranted congressional meddling, Democrats who side with Republicans will be at fault. And progressive activists will hold them accountable for the rest of their careers in politics.

The United States is facing a historic opportunity to make the region and the world more secure without resorting to war. We agree with our allies, negotiating partners and scores of national security experts: Congress should hold its fire and let diplomacy work.

2. Sign our petition telling Senator Menendez to stop warmongering on Iran. In late January, under pressure from progressive activists – including over 82,000 CREDO activists who signed our petition, hundreds of tweets, and great press coverage in New Jersey's paper of record1 2 and the Huffington Post3 – Senator Menendez and his caucus of warmongering Democrats blinked, agreeing to delay a vote on their diplomacy-killing sanctions bill until the end of March.

Now, with Menendez pushing a new anti-diplomacy bill, we need to speak out again and tell him that he's risking war with Iran. Click here to read and sign the petition.

Thank you for taking action.
