Dear 5849376,

Since the news of NBC anchor Brian Williams' Iraq War exaggerations broke, FOX News Channel and its right-wing hosts, including Bill O'Reilly, have used the revelations as an opportunity to rail against the so-called "liberal media."1

But there's just one problem with that: According to a new report from Mother Jones, none other than Bill O'Reilly himself has been deceiving viewers for years about his supposed experience as a war correspondent in the Falklands War.1

FOX News benefits enormously from positioning itself as a news channel rather than a political propaganda shop – including evading campaign finance rules. We have to hold FOX accountable to the most basic standards for journalistic credibility – and this time the network has clearly crossed the line.

While Bill O'Reilly has, for years, touted his time covering the Falklands War and experiencing combat in 1982, the record now shows that no American reporters were on the ground. The report also reveals that O'Reilly's accounts of covering El Salvador's civil war and witnessing combat were greatly exaggerated.

But instead of doing the right thing – admitting fault and holding Bill O'Reilly accountable for his lies – both FOX News and O'Reilly have taken the exact opposite approach, doubling-down and bullying reporters. According to a FOX News spokeswoman, "Fox News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes and all senior management are in full support of Bill O'Reilly."2 And O'Reilly himself even went so far as to threaten Mother Jones reporter David Corn.3

Bill O'Reilly's lies, and what they say about FOX News's credibility, should concern all of us. He's used these experiences for years as a way to boost his credibility on matters of foreign policy and U.S. military interventions, while marginalizing the opposing views of those who haven't experienced or witnessed combat firsthand. And that's on top of a decade-long pattern of using his show to spread right-wing propaganda based on misinformation.

FOX News now has its own journalistic scandal on its hands. We need to let them know there are no double standards when it comes to journalistic integrity.
