Republicans cave on abortion ban. We helped make it happen.

Dear 5849376,

On Thursday, Republicans in the House planned to vote on an abortion ban. It was their way of pandering to their radical base on the 42nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

Guess what? They didn't do it. And you helped force them to back down.

On Wednesday, our friends at NARAL Pro-Choice America delivered more than 150,000 signatures, including almost 106,000 from CREDO Action members, demanding that Congress block the Republican abortion ban.

The bill, which had only the narrowest exceptions for rape, went too far even for this Congress. The widespread outcry against attempts to play politics with women's rights, combined with a revolt among women in the Republican caucus, forced Republican leaders to cancel the abortion ban vote.

No doubt this Republican Congress will bring up bill after bill to limit access to reproductive health care and defund Planned Parenthood. And President Obama will veto these bills. But this was an important victory. Republicans staged a vote on a bill they had promised the most radical elements of their base on the most important day of the year for the anti-choice lobby -- the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. And in part because of your pressure, they had to cancel that vote. We're making a difference.

While the abortion ban is dead in the House for now, Mitch McConnell is still ready to bring it up for a vote in the Senate. We have to keep the pressure on.

Dear 5849376,

Stop Mitch McConnell's abortion ban

Last week, Mitch McConnell took over the Senate, and one of his top priorities will be passing a 20-week abortion ban.

Banning abortion after 20 weeks takes crucial medical decisions away from women, their families, and their doctors. It's also unconstitutional, as the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision protects a woman's right to choose an abortion up to the point of fetal viability (which occurs well beyond 20 weeks).

This is nothing more than political grandstanding by Mitch McConnell, who promised anti-abortion activists during the election that he would make banning abortion a top priority if Republicans won control of the Senate.

Tell the Senate: Don't play politics with women's lives. Click here to sign the petition.

Twenty-week abortion bans are part of a concerted effort by anti-choice activists to undermine women's rights and challenge Roe v. Wade. They rely on junk science to try to stake a claim that a fetus can feel pain after 20 weeks. The "fetal pain concept" has already been disproven by mainstream scientific studies, but is still the basis for many of the state-based bans.1

If a 20-week ban passes the Senate, it will further legitimize this anti-woman junk science.2

Put anti-choice senators on notice: When anti-woman politicians try to take away women's rights, we fight back. Click here to sign the petition.

The reality is that 99% of abortions do happen before the 21st week.3 When they happen after that mark, it's usually because something terrible has occurred with the pregnancy and the parents make the heart-wrenching decision to terminate. But Roe v. Wade does not protect just 99% of women, it protects all of them. Every time a conservative politician is allowed to move the goal post further from Roe, women lose.

When a woman's right to choose is under attack by right-wing extremists, we need to be there to defend it. Even staunchly anti-choice senators need to hear from their constituents that a 20-week abortion ban bill crosses a line. CREDO members have helped defeat other anti-choice measures across the country. We cannot let the right wing build momentum that helps them erode the protections afforded to women through Roe v. Wade.

Tell the Senate: We won't let you take away women's rights. Click the link below to sign the petition:

Thanks for standing up for women.
