The flu season has started and this year is set to be even worse than last. Many Americans who fall ill without paid sick leave will be forced to keep working to pay the bills, putting their coworkers at risk of infection and costing businesses billions.1

The United States is the only developed country in the world that doesn't guarantee paid sick or family leave for its workers.2

The sad reality is that when the 40 million Americans without paid sick leave fall ill, start a family, or care for a sick relative, they struggle to make ends meet, drop out of the workforce, and ultimately fall behind.

Currently, there is no federal law that ensures all workers must receive paid sick or family leave, but a common-sense bill introduced by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand could change that. The Family and Medical Insurance Leave Act (FAMILY Act) would set up a federal program to ensure all workers have equal access to all-important paid family and medical leave.

Senator Gillibrand's legislation would establish an insurance plan to provide paid family and sick leave to every working American so that workers would no longer have to choose between receiving a paycheck and caring for themselves or a family member. Our friends from the SEIU, the AFL-CIO, and a number of other progressive organizations have already put their support behind this bill.3

And there is clear momentum for paid sick leave all across the country. Just weeks ago, California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law landmark legislation requiring employers to provide paid sick leave. State and local lawmakers across the country, including in Portland, Oregon, Newark, New Jersey, and Seattle, Washington have already enacted laws requiring employers to provide paid sick days. Now is the time to pressure Congress to support federal legislation that will cover all workers.4

Right now, low-wage earners and women make up a disproportionate number of workers without paid family and medical leave. In fact, 70% of all low-income workers and nearly 22 million working women lack these basic protections when they fall ill, have a baby, or must care for a sick parent or relative.5

While opponents of the workers rights movement rail against paid sick leave as costing businesses too much, the facts prove otherwise. Recent research reveals that 87 percent of employers believe paid sick and family leave do not increase business costs, and 9 percent even say it saves them money. On top of that, 90 percent of voters and a plurality of small businesses surveyed support legislation to provide paid sick and family leave.6

It's time to act now to urge Congress to support Senator Gillibrand's critical legislation. Millions of working Americans without paid sick time are only one illness or serious family issue away from losing a job or facing crippling debt.
