Dear 5849376,

Save the Senate

"Rarely has a U.S. president been so wrong about so much at the expense of so many."1

You might think this was something CREDO wrote about George W. Bush, whose callous indifference to human suffering and reckless disregard for the truth led us into the avoidable and unnecessary catastrophe that was the Iraq war. But it's not. Outrageously, this is a quote from Dick Cheney, writing in the Wall Street Journal, blaming President Barack Obama for the entirely predictable consequences of Bush and Cheney's war in Iraq.

As an architect and catalyst for George W. Bush's catastrophic adventurism in Iraq, and a war criminal for his role in the Bush administration's illegal torture program, Cheney can never be a credible expert on President Obama's handling of the war.

Vice President Dick Cheney was instrumental in building what has now been proven to be an utterly false and misleading case for invading Iraq based on cherry-picked intelligence. After Bush's own Pentagon provided counter-evidence to his claims, Cheney continued to claim in public that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. And despite the fact that the CIA made it clear within the Bush administration that there was no link between Saddam Hussein's regime and terrorists targeting the U.S., Dick Cheney would not stop asserting publicly the existence of a relationship between Iraq and Al Qaeda.2 And he did it all with a smug self-assurance that he has retained despite the harrowing consequences of his lies.

It's not just Dick Cheney. On its iconic Meet the Press Sunday morning program, NBC recently gave Bush's disgraced former Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz a platform to blame President Obama for the current crisis in Iraq.3 Paul Wolfowitz was one of the architects of George W. Bush's disastrous invasion of Iraq who famously said that invading Iraq would not be a financial drag on the U.S. because Iraq could pay for its own reconstruction with oil revenues.4 The war has cost the U.S. over $3 trillion.

Cheney, Wolfowitz and their gang of chickenhawk neo-cons who continue to advocate for endless war by any means necessary got it catastrophically wrong on Iraq, and they've got blood on their hands for the current religious strife and exploding humanitarian crisis developing in the Middle East. Blaming the current situation on President Obama is ludicrous -- and it's shocking the traditional media are offering discredited Bush administration officials a platform to once again mislead the American people and falsely indict the president.

The media completely failed to do its job in the wake of September 11, and as a result George Bush and Dick Cheney were able to build a case for war based on lies and manipulated intelligence. With the U.S. possibly on the brink of another war in Iraq, we need to push back hard against the chickenhawks and war criminals who tricked the American people into supporting the 2003 invasion of Iraq and are now trying to force the president into a box over restarting their failed war.

Over 4,000 American service members have died and over 32,000 have been wounded since the U.S. invaded Iraq in 2002.5 Over 500,000 Iraqis have died from violence related to the invasion and occupation in the last decade.6 This concerted campaign by known liars such as Cheney to spread anti-Obama, pro-war propaganda is not only offensive, it's dangerous.

Thank you for joining CREDO in standing up to Dick Cheney.
