Sign the petition: Ban bee-killing pesticides in the White House gardens

The email below is from Tiffany Finck-Haynes, a CREDO activist in Washington, D.C. Tiffany started a petition on CREDO Mobilize, where activists can launch their own campaigns for progressive change. Dear 5849376,

Earlier this month, First Lady Michelle Obama finished planting her sixth-annual White House kitchen garden. But this year, she's doing something different. She planted a pollinator garden to support the 70,000 bees already gracing the presidential lawn as well as monarch butterflies and other pollinators.

The first lady is clearly taking a stand by including support for pollinators in her garden. Now we need to build support for the U.S. to follow Europe's lead in banning the pesticides linked to bee colony collapse. Because so many plants are pre-treated with these pesticides, even Mrs. Obama may not know if bee-killing pesticides are part of the White House garden. We need Mrs. Obama to take a proactive stand and explicitly ban them.

That's why I started my own campaign on CREDOMobilize.com, which allows activists to start their own petitions. My petition, which is to First Lady Michelle Obama, says the following:

As our nation's first lady, and gardener-in-chief, please set an example for the nation by banning bee-killing pesticides from the White House gardens and urging the EPA and Congress to take swift action to protect bees and other pollinators.

Sign the petition: Ask Michelle Obama to join the fight to save the bees.

Bees are vital to our food and farming system, and they provide a critical service to our economy, supporting $20 to $30 billion in agricultural production annually. But the situation for our pollinators is dire: Last year beekeepers reported record-breaking losses of 40 percent to 90 percent, with some beekeepers losing 100 percent of their hives.

The European Union has placed a two-year moratorium on bee-killing pesticides, the UK's top retailers have stopped selling them and the city of Eugene, Oregon, banned them, but the EPA has not. The bees are telling us we can't wait any longer to take action, but the United States Environmental Protection Agency continues to ignore a growing body of science and has delayed action until 2018.

Like many backyard gardeners, the first lady is doing her part to create habitat for bees, which are essential to one out of three bites of food we eat, and which are dying off globally in record numbers.

Please ask Mrs. Obama to set an example for the nation by banning bee-killing pesticides from the White House gardens and urging the EPA and Congress to take swift action to protect bees and other pollinators.

Will you join me and add your name to my petition urging Michelle Obama to ban bee-killing pesticides from the White House gardens?

Thank you for your support.

Tiffany Finck-Haynes
