Equal pay for equal work

Senate vote on equal pay

Tell your senators:
"In the United States, women, on average, earn 23% less than men. That's unacceptable, and puts women and their families at serious disadvantage. The Paycheck Fairness Act is an opportunity to fix that gap. Vote yes on the bill, and show your support for equal pay."

Dear 5849376,

Equal pay now

The average American woman would have had to work from January 1, 2013, until April 8, 2014, to earn what the average American man earned in 2013.1 This gap exists despite the passage of the Equal Pay Act 50 years ago -- and the gap's even worse for mothers and women of color.

The Paycheck Fairness Act will help close that gap. And there's a key vote coming up this week in the Senate.

It's ridiculous that we have to debate the merits of equal pay for men and women in 2014, but when women make 77 cents for every dollar men do, there's work to be done. Women are often still punished if they inquire about wage differences. But without real salary information, it's impossible to know that there's even a disparity.

The Paycheck Fairness Act helps make sure that women can get the information they need without fear of retaliation. Combined with the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009, which allows much greater access to the courts for victims of wage discrimination, this bill will help close the pay gap.

While it's hard to imagine that anyone wouldn't want men and women to receive equal pay, there's been serious Republican resistance to the bill. It was defeated in 2012 and Republicans seem committed to making sure it doesn't pass now.
