Stop Democratic hawks from sabotaging President Obama

CREDO action
Tell Democrats: Don't sabotage President Obama's ability to negotiate with Iran.

The petition to Democratic senators reads:
"President Obama has asked for, and deserves, the time and the political space necessary to make a reasonable deal with Iran. We should be easing sanctions with a goal of ending them in exchange for a verifiable agreement with Iran that prevents it from building a nuclear weapon. Now's not the time to ratchet up sanctions, which will only sabotage President Obama's ability to negotiate with Iran."

Dear 5849376,

No war with Iran

The United States and our international partners are currently engaged in some of the most promising multi-lateral negotiations with Iran about its nuclear program in over a decade.

But a number of Democratic senators are joining with Republicans to push for additional sanctions, which could easily derail these negotiations and make it much harder for President Obama to strike a reasonable deal with Iran.

President Obama has asked that no additional sanctions be imposed at this time. He needs, and he deserves, the time and political space necessary to strike a reasonable deal with Iran.

Democratic senators should be laying the groundwork for success, not undermining the president at this critical moment.

Sanctions have already crippled the Iranian economy and led to widespread economic pain, like rampant unemployment and shortages of medicine and other humanitarian supplies.

We should be easing sanctions with a goal of ending them in exchange for a verifiable agreement with Iran that prevents it from building a nuclear weapon.

While the purpose of sanctions has never been to punish ordinary Iranians, they are the ones who overwhelmingly feel the pain caused by sanctions.

Just a few months ago, the relatively disempowered Iranian populace exercised the political power they do have to overwhelmingly elect the most pragmatic and moderate candidate for president that they were allowed to vote for.

This is what set the stage for the serious diplomatic efforts underway right now, which will need time to bear fruit.

Ratcheting up sanctions even more not only means imposing a heavier burden on the Iranian populace, it means spoiling our chance to continue this process toward a diplomatic solution.

Adding additional sanctions right as the Iranians are sitting down at the negotiating table runs the risk of alienating Iranian pragmatists who want to negotiate with us in good faith, emboldening Iranian hardliners who don't want to negotiate with us, and fracturing the international unity that makes a reasonable and peaceful resolution with Iran much more likely.

The stakes of these talks are high. The alternative to a negotiated deal will be either a continually growing Iranian nuclear program or another American war in the Middle East.

This delicate and potentially pivotal moment is no time for Democrats to be undermining the president.

While we shouldn't take the recent thawing of relations between the United States and Iran as a sign that negotiations will be easy or that the Iranians will ultimately agree to a reasonable deal, we also shouldn't take counterproductive actions that make the negotiations even harder than they need to be.

Additional sanctions would only sabotage President Obama's ability to negotiate with Iran, and should be opposed.

Speak out today to make sure the Senate doesn't set us on a path that makes war inevitable.
