Monsanto Protection Act: Good news and bad news.

Update: Important progress against the Monsanto Protection Act.

Dear 5849376,

Yesterday, the Senate passed a farm bill which unfortunately did not include Senator Merkley's provision to repeal the Monsanto Protection Act.

Despite the pressure from an incredible 340,664 activists including yourself, Sen. Merkley's amendment never even came up from a vote. Initially it was blocked from consideration by Senator Blunt (R-MO) - who has taken over $160,000 from Monsanto in campaign and PAC contributions since 2008.2 Then the clock ran out as senators continued obstructing each others' amendments, and Senator Reid moved for a vote on the farm bill without including any amendments.

There is some good news however. Because the Monsanto Protection Act (MPA) was attached to the continuing resolution to fund the government through September, the MPA itself is set to expire in September.

And thanks to Senator Merkley's leadership, and the pressure you created, Senate Agriculture Committee Chair Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) committed on the senate floor to blocking the Monsanto Protection Act from getting renewed in the same way it was passed -- anonymously, without debate, and without most in congress even knowing it was in the bill.

This is a positive development which will force anyone in Congress who would put Monsanto's profits ahead of the safety of our food, to at least do so in the light of day, where we'll be able to build pressure and hold them accountable.

The first step in making sure the Monsanto Protection Act expires in September is to thank Senator Stabenow, and make sure she follows through on her commitment to block another shady extension of the Monsanto Protection Act.

We'll continue to let you know how you can take action to fight Monsanto's influence in our food system, and support the efforts of senators like Sen. Merkley and Sen. Stabenow who are taking a stand.

Thanks for your activism - it makes a difference.
