Speak up against overzealous prosecutors in Florida

End the unjustified prosecution of Kaitlyn Hunt

Dear 5849376,

I started my own campaign on CREDO's new site that allows activists to start their own petitions.

My petition, which is to Florida Assistant State Attorney Brian Workman and Indian River County State Attorney Bruce Colton, asks the following:

End the unjustified prosecution of 18-year-old Kaitlyn Hunt, who was engaged in a consensual relationship with another female high-school student. Her behavior cannot seriously be portrayed as predatory, and the felony charges against her could have devastating consequences for her future.

Overzealous Florida prosecutors are trying to make an example out of an 18-year-old student. And if they succeed, she'll pay for the rest of her life.1

Shortly after Kaitlyn's 18th birthday, she was reportedly in a same-sex relationship with another student about three years younger. But when her girlfriend's parents found out, they not only got Kaitlyn kicked out of graduation ceremonies at school, they also got her arrested. 2

Kaitlyn's family has reported that Assistant State Attorney Brian Workman has offered an outrageous plea deal that would require her to accept "two years house arrest and one year probation." And the judge in the case will have the option of branding Kaitlyn a sex offender, which could follow her for the rest of her life.

There's no doubt that sexual predators must be stopped, but there's no evidence that Kaitlyn's behavior was predatory or justifies this kind of overzealous reaction by law enforcement, which could include a felony conviction. Relationships between students in different grades in high school are highly common, and there have been no other reported similar prosecution of students in similar, heterosexual relationships at any schools nearby.

Click here to learn more and add your name to my petition to Florida Assistant State Attorney Brian Workman and Indian River County State Attorney Bruce Colton, and demand they drop the overreaching prosecution of Kaitlyn Hunt immediately.

Thank you for your support.

Patricia Metro-Patrick
