Dear Friend,

Republican Congressman Don Young is refusing to apologize for using a racial slur in an interview with an Alaska radio reporter.1

While Young has declared he "meant no disrespect" by referring to Latinos as "wetbacks," he has not apologized.

Tell Republican Rep. Don Young: Publicly apologize for using a racial slur against Latinos, and come out in support of comprehensive immigration reform.

In the interview, Rep. Young told the Alaska radio interviewer "We used to hire 50-60 wetbacks to pick tomatoes" in a discussion about his family's ranch. The offensive term is derived from an insult referring to Mexican immigrants who crossed the Rio Grande river to reach the United States.

It is not acceptable for a sitting Congressman to use a racial slur. And it is reprehensible that when called on it he has refused to apologize. Clearly Rep. Young does not understand he is abusing and dishonoring his position of authority as a U.S. Representative. Not only must he apologize, but he should come out in favor of comprehensive immigration reform.

It's racist attitudes like those expressed by Rep. Young that have stood in the way of a common sense approach to our nation's immigration laws. As someone whose family business depended on immigrant labor, Rep. Young should be embracing immigration reform, not relying on racial slurs to debase the debate.

This is just par for the course for Rep. Young who is no stranger to controversy. The same week that he slurred Latinos, the Anchorage Daily News reported that he "appeared to advise people to drink alone to reduce the risk of domestic violence" in a public rally at the state capitol.2

Republican politicians like Rep. Don Young need to held accountable when they continue to cross the line whether it's racist statements or perpetuating anti-women rhetoric. Even though Rep. Young is an Alaska politician, he is representative of a disturbing trend in Republican politics, and we need to make sure this is seen as a national problem, not a local incident.

That's why we want outraged Americans from all 50 states to stand up for Latinos and speak out against the Republican party's nasty racism problem, starting with Rep. Don Young.

Tell Republican Rep. Don Young: Publicly apologize for using a racial slur against Latinos, and come out in support of comprehensive immigration reform. Click the link below to sign:
