Dear Friend,

On Monday, Senator Reid gutted the Senate's gun violence prevention bill, which has been gaining momentum since it was introduced after the massacre of 20 first-graders and six educators at Sandy Hook. The Senate Majority Leader defied the President, Vice President, and the majority of Americans by caving to the NRA and removing the ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.

In a craven political move, Senator Reid dumped key parts of President Obama's package of reforms on gun laws. The reason? To let NRA-Democrats get political cover at home by supporting a watered-down bill on background checks while avoiding a tough vote on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines in advance of next year's election.

We need to hold Senator Reid accountable.

Reid tried to cover-up for his actions by claiming he will allow an up-or-down vote on an amendment banning assault weapons. This amendment will clearly fail if separated from the gun background checks bill that has overwhelming public support, even from the NRA's own members. If Reid were serious about reforming our gun laws he would make the full Senate vote yes or no on the entire package of reforms.

President Obama has promised to do something about gun violence, and he's still looking to pass the assault weapons ban,1 so it's profoundly disappointing that Reid continues to put the interests of the NRA and its bought-and-paid-for Senators before the wishes2 — and safety — of Americans.

After the massacres at Sandy Hook, the Aurora movie theater, Virginia Tech, and the dozens of other mass shootings in recent years, it's astonishing that Reid could turn a blind eye to the urgency of stopping further mass shootings just to give the NRA another win.

Reid needs to know that, as the Senate Majority Leader, we are holding him responsible for giving up on the bill before debate even began.

By cutting the assault weapons ban out of the proposed bill, Reid has needlessly given the media an opportunity to declare the provision dead. But as Senator Dianne Feinstein recounted recently, current Vice President Joe Biden laughed at her when she proposed the bill in 1994, and passing the bill required intervention from then-President Bill Clinton.3

Passing an assault weapons ban has always been an uphill climb, but giving up before that process has barely begun is unacceptable.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid needs to hear from you now about his decision to remove the assault weapons ban and high-capacity ammunition magazine ban from the Senate's gun violence prevention bill. Click the link below to add your name to the message:
