FW: Poverty wages

Dear Friend,

The need to keep pressing Congress on behalf of working Americans who desperately need a raise in federal minimum wage remains urgent. At just $7.25 an hour, or roughly $15,000 per year, the current federal minimum wage is leaving millions of hardworking Americans in poverty.

That's why we are joining with our friends at former Senator Russ Feingold's Progressives United to urge the Senate to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour.

Please read the email from Sen. Russ Feingold below, and join us in taking action.

Senators: Raise the minimum wage. Take action today.

It doesn't have to be this way.

Hardworking Americans at minimum-wage jobs deserve a decent standard of living, but for too long, they have felt the sting of poverty.

Big corporate lobbyists desperately want to keep the minimum wage low. But right now, momentum is building for change.

President Obama declared his commitment to raising the minimum wage in his State of the Union address. And just this week, a strong bill to raise the minimum wage has been introduced in the Senate.

We need to make sure our senators know that voters like us support this important measure to reduce income inequality.

Join the fight for a livable minimum wage. Sign our petition to senators today to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour.

This bill is crucial because it raises wages with inflation, helping to ensure that the millions of Americans working at the minimum wage will not fall back into poverty as the economy grows — no matter what Congress does in the future. And this need is much too important to be left up to the future whims of Congress.

A person working a 40-hour week at minimum wage makes about $15,000 a year. That's not enough to get by.

A recent study by the National Low Income Housing Coalition determined that $15,000 a year is not enough to rent a two-bedroom apartment at market prices in any state — not 1 in 50. Then take into account healthcare, food, and other necessities, and it's clear why this increase is such a high priority for Americans.

The time to raise minimum wage standards is long past due — and the forces of change are aligning right now. We have to act immediately.

Sign progressives' petition to senators now to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour-.

One of the best ways to aid our economic recovery is to build up the standing of all working Americans. Increasing the minimum wage will encourage the rising tide that lifts everyone — and it's long overdue.

Thank you for uniting as a progressive,

Russ Feingold
