Dear Friend,

Emergency contraception is safe. And it can make a huge difference in the life of a woman who has been raped, or simply is not ready to face the consequence of an unintended pregnancy.

The American Medical Association, the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and even the American Academy of Pediatrics have all endorsed easy access for all to emergency contraception.1 So why is the Obama administration blocking an FDA decision which would have allowed emergency contraceptives to be sold on-the-shelf, next to condoms and pregnancy tests?

Last year, Secretary Kathleen Sebelius — for the first time in history — overruled an FDA decision which would have allowed emergency contraceptives to be sold on-the-shelf. The Obama administration caved to religious conservatives on this issue because it was under fire for requiring insurance companies to cover birth control.

The result of Sebelius' restrictions has been widespread confusion and misinformation about who can buy emergency contraception.2 But the moment when emergency contraceptives are most needed is exactly the time when women can't afford to be turned away by discrimination, ignorance, or unnecessary delays.3

Women's health should never be subject to political jockeying or a "favor economy" among politicians. The president was resoundingly reelected in part because of support from women enraged by conservative attacks on birth control, so now his administration must recognize that we can't accept more excuses or delays on this.

The hormones in emergency contraceptives have been taken by millions of women for decades and have been proven safe and effective. And there's no evidence that allowing teens to access emergency contraceptives increases risky behavior. In fact, evidence shows that emergency contraceptives help lower the rate of teen pregnancies.

The vast majority of teen pregnancies are unintended, and they have real and long-lasting consequences for young women.4 They are more likely to drop out of school, to smoke or drink alcohol during pregnancy, to face depression, and to experience domestic violence. They are also less likely to obtain prenatal care or breast-feed.5

That's why Sec. Sebelius should accept the FDA's recommendation that emergency contraception be made available to all women over the counter.
