Don't let the Senate undermine diplomacy with Iran.

Dear Friend,

If the American people wanted a president that would precipitously go to war with Iran, they would have elected Mitt Romney.

Yet as the Senate considers the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), behind-the-scenes efforts are being made to secretly insert a dangerous provision into the bill that would make it U.S. policy "to take all necessary measures, including military action if required, to prevent Iran from threatening the United States, its allies, or Iran's neighbors with a nuclear weapon."

If it passes, this language would take us another step closer to war — not only because it goes farther than any previous official policy articulated by our government, but also because it will further poison relations with Iran and directly undercut the president's ability to negotiate a peaceful settlement right when we need diplomacy the most.

Call Sens. Grassley and Harkin and tell them: Don't undermine President Obama's ability to avoid a costly and unnecessary war with Iran.

In the world of international diplomacy, words matter. And proclaiming a more belligerent policy in the middle of negotiations is deeply counterproductive.

As former National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski said recently: "The sooner we get off the notion that at some point we may strike Iran, the better the chances for the negotiations that are ongoing."

Yet we see multiple efforts in Congress to undercut the president's ability to negotiate with Iran. This is only one of them.

There are also efforts to ratchet up sanctions and to limit President Obama's ability to ease sanctions as part of negotiations.

And sadly, we cannot expect anyone in the Senate put the brakes on these efforts without encouragement (and pressure) from us.

Too many senators are ready to go to war with Iran. And many others, including those we might assume to be our allies, see no upside in standing up to those howling for war.

The American people don't want another unnecessary and costly war, and we need to speak out to make sure every last senator knows that as well.

Call Sens. Grassley and Harkin and tell them: Don't undermine President Obama's ability to avoid a costly and unnecessary war with Iran. Click the link below for the numbers to call and a sample script:
