Tell Rep. Boswell: Support President Obama by drawing a line in the sand on the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy.

Dear Friend,

A "grand bargain." "Taxmageddon." The "Fiscal Cliff."

Whatever happens in the November elections, we're headed for a major showdown in the lame duck session at the end of the year that could result in a massive restructuring of the role of government.

We know what the Republicans want: to keep taxes on the wealthy and large corporations unconscionably low and military spending sky-high; to gut Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security; and to make brutal cuts to important domestic programs like food stamps and unemployment insurance.

But the Democrats have presented a confusing, incoherent and inconsistent picture of their bottom lines.

We know backroom negotiations are already happening. And if you want to stop the Democrats from pre-emptively caving, it's time to speak out.

Tell Rep. Boswell: Support President Obama by drawing a line in the sand on the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy.

President Obama has long said that the Bush tax cuts for people making more than $250,000 a year should be allowed to expire, and Democrats in Congress have long stood behind him.

Yet that unity has now started to fray.

There's no doubt that most Democrats would prefer the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy to expire. But mere preference is not enough.

We need to get as many Democrats on the record as possible with a firm commitment to vote against extending the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy.

John Boehner is looking to cut a deal, and he cannot rely on the members of his own caucus to come up with the votes to pass something through the House.

If enough Democrats draw a line in the sand, they can affect the negotiations. But if the Democrats give up on the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy, it's hard to see what they won't give up on.
