Call House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer: Tell him NO backroom deal to cut Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security benefits.

Dear Friend,

Recently we asked CREDO activists to push back against House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer's efforts to sell out our social safety net. More than 148,000 CREDO activists signed our petition demanding that Hoyer not cut any back room "grand bargain" that cuts Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security benefits. In addition, CREDO activists made over a thousand calls to Representative Hoyer's office telling him he "must not sell out millions of Americans" by putting benefit cuts on the table.

Your activism, along with Rep. Hoyer's statement in response, was covered by press outlets like Talking Points Memo and the Huffington Post.1

As a result, we know Rep. Hoyer, a key member of Democratic leadership in the House, is clearly feeling the pressure. Help us take it up a notch by calling his office today.

The pressure on Hoyer has been relentless. On Thursday, I delivered over 148,000 petition signatures to Rep. ,Hoyer's office, urging him not to cut any back room deals that include cuts to our social safety net. While we were delivering the petition, the phones were literally ringing off the hook with calls from CREDO Action members. The staffer who accepted the box of your signatures said that the office had received over 1,000 calls — and that she would make sure Rep. Hoyer received the petition.

Feeling the heat from petition signatures and the press coverage they have sparked, late last week Rep. Hoyer denied that he had ever suggested raising the retirement age saying:

"[Some claim] I've said we ought to raise the age. I haven't said that. What I've said is I think everything ought to be on the table."2

When Rep. Hoyer says "some claim" he means CREDO Action members. You be the judge. In 2010 Rep. Hoyer said "We should consider a higher retirement age or one pegged to lifespan".3 At CREDO we have drawn a line in the sand — no cuts to benefits. We must act now to prevent Steny Hoyer or any other Democrat for that matter from laying the groundwork for a preemptive cave on cuts to Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid benefits.3

Rep. Hoyer clearly doesn't want press about his behind the scenes maneuverings to cut a back room deal to cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. If Rep. Hoyer wants to cut the deficit he should be working on rolling back the Bush tax cuts on the wealthiest Americans and bringing our troops home from the disastrous and costly occupation of Afghanistan.

We need you to help us hold Rep. Hoyer accountable by asking him to make an unequivocal commitment not to strike any backroom deal behind closed doors to cut Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid benefits. If we can turn up the pressure now and expose Rep. Hoyer's efforts, we may be able to stop a bad deal well before it comes to the floor of the House for a vote.

Your calls matter. Given how rapidly Hoyer's office has responded to our petition and phone calls in recent weeks, it is clear they are paying close attention to what we have to say.

Thank you for speaking out to hold House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer accountable.
