Thanks to your pressure, Karen Handel resigns.

Dear Friend,

The fight to defend Planned Parenthood is never over. But yesterday we won another victory when Karen Handel, a Tea Party politician and senior executive at Susan G. Komen for the Cure, resigned.

After Susan G. Komen for the Cure reversed its decision to defund Planned Parenthood, CREDO members called on the organization to fire the Tea Party politician who engineered the attack.

Nearly 50,000 people signed the petition and hundreds made phone calls to the Susan G. Komen foundation's headquarters in Dallas, Texas. And that was just days after 400,000 CREDO activists took action in the wake of the organization's attack on Planned Parenthood.

Every time Planned Parenthood is under attack, CREDO and its members are there to mount a fierce defense of the organization. Not only is CREDO the biggest corporate contributor to Planned Parenthood, but our CREDO Action members respond by signing petitions, making phone calls and showing up at protests and rallies every time Tea Party Republicans try to bring Planned Parenthood down. It's thanks to your continued vigilance that together we are making a difference.

Now it's time for the board members that enabled Handel's campaign to defund Planned Parenthood to resign. The best way to save the Susan G. Komen foundation is to replace the board members who put Tea Party politics before women's health with donors, volunteers, and cancer survivors who have made the organization a global leader in the fight against breast cancer.

Because the attacks on Planned Parenthood will keep coming, whether from anti-choice Republican Rep. Cliff Stearns whose sham investigation was used to justify Komen's actions, or from serial deceiver James O'Keefe who helped bring down ACORN, or a seemingly neutral organization like the Komen foundation, we will never let up in our support for this vitally important women's health organization.

The board of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is in desperate need of reform. Whether they knew what they were doing or didn't understand what was happening when they approved the policy change aimed at defunding Planned Parenthood, the board was complicit in a series of decisions and follow up responses that almost destroyed the organization.

There are 140 Komen affiliates across the country. These are the organizers and volunteers who work year in and year out to produce their local Race for the Cure. They want to get Komen to get back to the business of doing everything in its power to fight breast cancer. And the board members who put Tea Party politics before women's health should be replaced by representatives of these local donors, volunteers and organizers.

Many of the nine members of Komen's board are close friends — wealthy Republicans who are influential in Texas politics. This wouldn't be a problem if they had a demonstrated track record of putting women's health before Tea Party politics. But they don't. In fact, there is only one board member who represents the interests of the staff and affiliates of Komen.1

The Komen staff and affiliates fought tirelessly against the decision to defund Planned Parenthood — and it's no surprise that their strenuous objections were overlooked when they only had one ally on the board of directors.

It's clear that the current members of the board should not continue to represent Komen.
