Tell Susan G. Komen: Fire Karen Handel.

Dear Friend,

Last week, Susan G. Komen for the Cure reversed its decision to defund a Planned Parenthood program that gives millions of low-income women access to breast cancer screenings.

While the decision was a victory for the millions of men and women who joined together to demand change, the woman behind the attack on Planned Parenthood, Karen Handel, is still in a senior position at Susan G. Komen.

What's more, the members of the board who hired her and approved the policy change aimed at defunding Planned Parenthood need to be replaced with new board members whose number one priority is fighting breast cancer, not playing politics.

Karen Handel has a long record of opposing Planned Parenthood. In fact, she ran for Governor of Georgia on an explicitly anti-Planned Parenthood platform.2 And in the midst of massive public backlash that seriously compromised the Komen Foundation, she has yet to resign or even comment publicly on her role in the disastrous turn of events that followed the public announcement of defunding Planned Parenthood.

Handel pushed for the policy that would single out Planned Parenthood alone for defunding, owing to a politically motivated investigation launched by Republican Rep. Cliff Stearns, one of the most anti-choice members of Congress.3

According to the Huffington Post:

"Karen Handel was the prime instigator of this effort, and she herself personally came up with investigation criteria," the source, who requested anonymity for professional reasons, told HuffPost. "She said, 'If we just say it's about investigations, we can defund Planned Parenthood and no one can blame us for being political.'"1

But Handel couldn't have done this alone. Komen's professional staff argued against defunding Planned Parenthood. But the Komen board, moved more by ideology than a commitment to cancer prevention, sided with Handel and overrode staff objections. In fact Komen's top public health official, Mollie Williams, resigned in protest of the board's decision.4

Karen Handel and the Komen board jeopardized the health and lives of millions of women. They used Susan G. Komen as a tool in the politically motivated witch hunt against Planned Parenthood. Now Susan G. Komen needs to hear that Karen Handel needs to be fired, and the board members who allowed her to use Komen as political tool must be replaced with people who won't play politics with breast cancer prevention.

We know that Komen listens when we stand together and send a singular, clear message.

And now that Komen is frantically trying to rebuild trust in its organization, there is no better time to tell Susan G. Komen that the only way it will truly win back the trust of the public is by firing Karen Handel and appointing new board members.
