Dear Friend,

As the threat of a government shutdown looms, Democrats have agreed to enormous budget cuts.

But that's not enough for the Republicans in the House who are willing to bring the entire federal government to a grinding halt unless Congress defunds the Clean Air Act, Planned Parenthood and public broadcasting.

Democrats can and must stand their ground and demand a clean budget — one that is free from these ideological "riders."

But Senate Democrats won't be able to fight if the White House does an end-run around them and cuts a deal with Republicans.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has already made public statements rejecting the Tea Party's extremist wish list of policy changes — specifically saying he won't allow a vote on a bill that defunds the Clean Air Act, Planned Parenthood or public broadcasting. And now the president needs to draw a hard line too.1

Call the White House. Tell President Obama: Demand a clean budget free from the Tea Party's ideological "riders." Click here for the phone number and a sample script.

Despite the fact that they only represent a majority of one chamber of Congress, House Republicans are using the threat of a shutdown to hold the needs of all Americans hostage to the Tea Party's extremist agenda.

The worst thing Democrats could do in this situation is appease the very people who are playing chicken with the functioning of our government.

We can't allow a repeat of the Bush tax cut fight where the White House undercut Senate Democrats by cutting a deal directly with House Republicans.

Call the White House. Tell President Obama: Demand a clean budget free from the Tea Party's ideological "riders." Click here for the phone number and a sample script.

Thank you for standing up to Tea Party extremism.
